Was mir zu den Wearables einfällt, schrieb ich kürzlich so für eine Arbeit nieder:
Underneath the microtrends of the fashion
industry, a trend is lingering that eventually might obliterate all things
physical: the fusion of man and machine.
Initially in this process, the “machine”
was attached to the body. Watches have now been worn since the 15th century CE. Pens clasped breastpockets. Filofaxes, dictaphones, pagers, PAs, cellphones and smartphones were
carried by hand, some people stowed them in belt cases.
These machines and their functions are now
morphed into one gadget, appearing right now as smart watches. They are coming back to
the wrist of mankind, a comfy seat we are already used to give to them.
But then, the more technology gets
attached to the body, and the more brain functions are outsourced to chips, the
more these chips are going to source themselves into, alas, the corpus.
So while in some years Zara might re-popularize the necktie as a “wearable” that houses sensors, cameras and loudspeakers between two layers of fashionable silk cloth [was für eine köstliche Idee ich da hatte! Schenkte ich euch.], in the end technology might as well completely suck us into virtual reality, and strip us of our physical presence. As depicted in fiction, we might lie inert in chambers, our heads plugged into machines. Henceforth, getting dressed is superfluous.
